In Brief: County to buy chunk of coves
The county will soon be the owner of the sandy beach area at Pirates Coves that has
traditionally been used by the public as an unofficial nude beach.
Last Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors gave county staff the green light to purchase the land that’s owned by San Miguelito Partners for $1.256 million. The funding will come from the county’s Park/Public Facility Fees account.
As part of the purchase
negotiation, the county also
accepted an “irrevocable offer to dedicate” from San Miguelito Partners for a parcel that
includes the Cave Landing parking lot area above Pirates Cove and the trail leading down the cliff to the beach.
The purchase also includes a 5-acre parcel adjacent to the Bob Jones Bike Trail near the intersection of San Luis Bay and Avila Beach drives, which may be developed as a rest area along the trail, according to county staff.
DANA seeking curious helpers
The Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos are searching for
volunteers, who enjoy mysteries and puzzles, to serve on the
research committee.
Volunteers would help reconstruct the life and events of the family and visitors at the historic Dana Adobe during the mid-1800s.
The group is also resuming its oral history program and needs people to conduct interviews, with coaching provided, as well as edit and transcribe information.

Teenager injured in accidental shooting
A young Arroyo Grande boy was taken to the hospital Saturday with a gunshot wound in his forearm after a stray bullet penetrated the wall of his home and lodged in his arm, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department.
The unidentified juvenile was watching television when he was struck by a .22-caliber bullet that had traveled more than 300 yards after being fired from a rifle by a 13-year-old who was target shooting, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, two 13-year-old boys were target shooting on vacant property in the 200 block of Corbett Canyon Road when one of the boys shot at a squirrel and missed.
The stray round penetrated the home where the young boy was watching television and struck him in the arm. His injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.
The 13-year-old who shot the rifle is facing accidental shooting charges, according to the spokesman.
Authorities aren’t releasing the name or age of the victim or the name of the 13-year-old suspect because both are juveniles.
Orientation offered for prospective foster parents
After marking National Adoption Month in November, a local nonprofit agency is offering free orientation classes to prospective foster and adoptive parents during the first week of December.
Aspiranet, founded in 1975, will hold informational classes at 6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Saturday in its office at 200 S. 13th St., Suite 101, in Grover Beach.
The classes will describe the “foster to adopt” program, the need for adoptive homes in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, and the steps taken from the court system to adoption.
“We’re hoping that if a family or individual has ever considered adoption or becoming a foster parent, that they will come to the orientation and gather information to help them make an educated decision if it’s the right choice for them,” said Anne Maddox, a family recruiter for Aspiranet.
For more information on the foster or adoption process, call Aspiranet at 473-8760 or (800) 439-1905.
