Library: Check It Out! A great site for early readers
By Susan Galluzzo/Contributor
This is such a busy time of year with all the holiday madness, it seems appropriate to share some “in-home” resources that only require your library card number and a computer.
Last month, we discussed Tumblebooks, but there are many other databases that are available also. Start your search at slolibrary.org. On the left side of the page is a section of quick links. Click Online Research Databases. Under Student Resources, you will find the Tumblebooks Library, but also you might want to check out “Kids InfoBits,” a great site for the early readers since the available materials are presented by reading levels. There is a teen page for that teenager who loves to read. “Magno Language” is a resource for learning languages, as well as “Road Warriors,” which is about travel. There are genealogy sites to browse and even a site called “Book Club Kit Box,” which provides 10 copies of a variety of titles for the small group who wishes to start a book club. The Web site is updated regularly so there are always new resources and events listed. Enjoy the many library resources from the comfort of home.

Curling up with a good book is especially nice on these cold evenings, but watching new DVDs is great, too. “American Zombie,” “Jane and the Dragon,” “21” and “Iron Man” can all be found on the shelves. Also available are “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Indiana Jones — Kingdom of Crystal” and “John Adams,” the new series, and the “Sex and the City” series. You might like “Mongol,” “Recount,” “McLeod’s Daughter,” “Crusade” or the “Memory Keeper’s Daughter.” With the upcoming holidays, there are the old favorites, “A Christmas Carol” and “Miracle on 34th Street.”
