Bits 'n' Pieces of Nipomo: Plein Air Painting Festival continues through Sunday

The Plein Air Painting Festival sponsored by the San Luis Art Center is under way through Sunday. More than 50 painters from throughout the United States, including local artists, are expected to be featured.
The Quick Draw will take place Saturday morning on the Mission Plaza. Local artist Dottie Hawthorne will be participating in the festival as well as the SLO Arts Open Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19. This year she will opening her private Avila Beach studio during the tour. Tour entry catalogs are available for purchase for $25 at her gallery, Gallery at the Network, at 778 Higuera, Suite B in SLO, and at other locations. Hawthorne is known for her “Special Effects with Pastel Underpainting,” which she wrote about for International Artist Magazine. Her painting, “Pygmy Oaks in Elfin Forest,” was published in the 2009 SWAP Calendar and also juried into the Annual Juried exhibit of the Pastel Society of America, “Pastels Only,” where it received an award. Registration is open for the Nipomo Youth Coalition 11th annual Fun Run which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Nipomo Regional Park. Entrants can participate in the Four-mile Race, the Two-Mile Walk, or, for children under 12, the One-half Mile Kids’ Run. Race registration and check-in is between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The Four-Mile Run begins at 9 a.m. and the other events will start immediately after. Pre-registration is $12, while the fee for day-of-race registration is $15 All participants will receive a T-shirt and a “goody bag.” In addition, all those registered will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing for numerous prizes contributed by local merchants. In the Four-Mile Race, first-, second- and third-place winners in each age group will receive awards. All proceeds from the day fund Nipomo Youth Coalition need-based scholarships for essential school materials, sports participation, and other programs. Arroyo Grande Community Hospital is collaborating with other local nonprofit organizations to offer free health screenings and information at the Bi-National Health Fair fom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Nipomo. The fair is part of the eighth annual Bi-National Health Week. Free health screenings and services will include glucose and cholesterol testing, blood pressure checks, bone density, eye exams, Body Mass Index, chiropractic services, breast health information and diet and nutrition information. A Mexican consulate representative will be available at the health fair as well as a barbeque and other refreshments will be available throughout the day.
