n Harry’s Night Club and Beach Bar, 690 Cypress St., Pismo Beach, hosts live music Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. This weekend, the headliner band will be Soulamente. Cost is $5 at the door.

n Local artist Laurel Sherrie will display her “Central Coast Colors,” paintings of local coastal, vineyard and landscape scenes, through mid-October at 991 Price St., Suite A., Pismo Beach.

n San Luis Obispo artist Robert Reynolds will be exhibiting his acrylic and watercolor paintings at the Art Center, 1010 Broad St., San Luis Obispo through Sept. 28. A native Californian whose artistic career spans 40 years, his paintings celebrate the luminous natural beauty found in the land and waters of the California Central Coast and the High Sierra.

n Local artist Mark Bryan will exhibit his artwork through Sept. 27 at the Circle of Friends Gallery, 5529 Tunitas, Atascadero. The show “Bread and Circus” featuring a variety of Mark’s work in Giclee prints on canvas.

Bryan’s work has been widely exhibited and featured on numerous satirical and political Web sites across the United States and around the world. His work has also appeared in many publications and magazines and illustration and cover art. This fall his well-known painting, “Mad Tea Party,” will be featured in the movie “Lake View Terrace.”

n A Jewelry Jubilee featuring the work of 12 artists and artist couples will be presented throughout September at the Gallery at the Network, 778 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo.

n The Studio Players will present “Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” through Oct. 5. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. Sundays at the Studio Players Theatre, 116 W. Branch St. in the Village of Arroyo Grande.

Tickets range in price from $15-$35. Wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres are included in the ticket price. No one under 18 will be admitted unless accompanied by an adult. For reservations, call 473-0377.

n Animation/Cartoons Voice-over workshops will be held Saturdays beginning today through Oct. 25 at Westside Studios in Oceano. The class is taught by a Los Angeles-based director. Cost is $225.

n The Central Coast Music Teachers’ Association will hold its annual kick-off luncheon at 10:30 a.m. at the home of Betty Hansen in Santa Maria. There will be a short business meeting covering the events planned for the new school year. Participants are invited to bring extra music they are not using to share or give to each other. Guests are invited to attend the meeting as well as the luncheon.

Sunday

n Art in the Park at Dinosaur Caves in Shell Beach will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of the month through Nov. 2. Over 90 artists will feature paintings, sculptures, ceramics, home decoration, jewelry, glass art, textiles, and bath and beauty products.

The event will include gourmet coffee and pastries, Alex’s barbecue, live music, art demonstrations and children’s activities. Admission is free. Dogs are welcome.

n The last of the Village Summer Concert Series will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Rotary Bandstand on the Village Green in Arroyo Grande. The San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation will welcome San Luis Mambo and The Pat Cormick Group.

The concert is free to the public and patrons are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets to the shows. Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab will be providing ice cream and will donate a portion of their proceeds to the featured nonprofit organizations. The South County Historical Society will be selling hot dogs, popcorn, lemonade and colas at all events.

n A Nu Monet Concert will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Dana Adobe, 672 S. Oakglen Ave., Nipomo. Pianist Jim Barnett and vocalist Deanna Delore, along with a number of guest artists, will perform tunes from the American songbook, show tunes, jazz standards and more at this fundraiser to benefit the Dana Adobe.

Preconcert reception starts at 3 p.m. Open seating is in a scenic outdoor venue.

n An art show and auction to help raise funds for the restoration of the Point San Luis Lighthouse will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Avila Beach Golf Resort.

Monday

n El Camino Art Association will meet at 10 a.m. at Ramona Garden Center, 993 Ramona Ave., Grover Beach. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month and are free and open to the public.

Art exhibits are at the Farmers Market in Arroyo Grande Village from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, the Avila Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays through Thanksgiving, the Arroyo Grande Village Summer Concert Series through Sept. 21, and ongoing at Gulliver’s Travel at Santa Rosa and Walnut streets, San Luis Obispo.

n Free Beginning Drawing Classes for seniors over 50 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon through Oct. 14 at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo Campus, Room 4720, Hwy. 1 at Education Drive.

Instructor is Larry Le Brane, local studio artist. The class will present basic skills of drawing, using pen and ink, charcoal and conte crayon. Students will receive a materials list in the first session and are asked to provide their own art supplies.

n A free presentation by Larry Watson, author of “Montana 1948,” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo A question-and answer-period will follow the presentation. A book signing will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

n Free Beginning Watercolor Classes for active adults will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each Thursday for nine weeks through Oct. 16 at the Shell Beach Veterans Hall, 230 Leeward Ave.

Instructor is local artist Daniel D. Martin. He will demonstrate and teach watercolor fundamentals and techniques. Planning and preparation, color mixing and theory, design and composition, and perspective are included as well. Students will receive a materials list in the first session and are asked to provide their own art supplies.

n Voice classes for children will begin Sept. 27 at St. Joseph’s Church in Nipomo under the sponsorship of the Nipomo Recreation Department.

The class emphasizes the correct way to sing and project the voice. Selections will include American, English and even some foreign language songs to introduce the students to the magic of performing in a wide world of music, especially songs that have been loved over the years.

n Russian master concert pianist Natalia Kartashova will present a solo piano recital at 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at First United Methodist Church, 311 S. Broadway (corner of Cook), Santa Maria. The program will feature favorite works of Chopin, Liszt and Schubert.

Kartashova, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia, began her musical studies at the age of 6 and completed there the School of Music for Gifted Children and the Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music. At the age of 12, Natalia gave her first concerts in St. Petersburg and in Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia. By the age of 13, she had won several first prizes and two Grand Prix in piano competitions for young composer and pianists in the USSR. She won the Grand Prix for Franz Liszt interpretation in Marseille, France, in 2003.

She lives in Santa Maria with her husband and daughter. Her most recent CD will be available for sale for $20 at the concert.

n Bonnie Raitt will perform at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Avila Beach Resort. Gates open at noon.
