Astronomy day planned at AG High School

The Cuesta College Astronomy Research Seminar will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room 607 at the Arroyo Grande High School campus.

The seminar leader will be astronomer Russell M. Genet, who is a research scholar in residence at Cal Poly, adjunct professor of astronomy at Cuesta College, and the director of the Orion Observatory near Santa Margarita Lake. He is the author of a dozen books and more than 100 research papers.

A Brown Bag Astronomy Research Luncheon Talk will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in Room 707. Genet will explain how Arroyo Grande High School students can conduct astronomical research, receive college credit for their research and become co-authors of published scientific papers. Registration material will be available.

Astronomy Research Seminar (Cuesta College Physics 193) registered students and also those, including the general public, who would like to hear about the seminar or would like to sign up, are welcome to attend the opening session. Registration materials will be available.

An Astronomy Research Star Party will be held from

8 to 9:30 p.m. outside Arroyo Grande High School Room 607. Students, faculty and the public are invited to learn how telescopes are used for research, view astronomical objects such as Jupiter and its moons and watch as pictures are taken of faint, distant galaxies.

Acting program for youth begins Sept. 6

A Fall Youth Acting Program will be taught by professional actor/director/producer Aaron Metchik from 2:20 to 5:20 p.m. Sundays from Sept. 6 through Nov. 23 at La Perla Del Mar, 205 Windward Ave. in Shell Beach. Cost is $450 for 12 weeks.

The program is for young students of all skill levels who have an interest in acting, performing and filmmaking. The classes will include improvisation, character building, filmmaking, music video production and the performance of memorized scenes and monologues.

On the last day of the program, the young actors will present a “Best Of” showcase for friends, family and the general public. Their films will be projected on a big screen and their stage scenes will be performed live.
