n Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) is holding a giveaway of a 2008 Smart Car Passion Coupe. The car will be on display July 3 at the Farmers Market in San Luis Obispo where the public can ask questions and buy tickets.

Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased by phone at 541-6542 or at the CASA office, 75 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold and they are expected to sell out quickly.

Proceeds support the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers who advocate for abused, neglected and abandoned children in San Luis Obispo County.

n The San Luis Obispo Model Railroad Association and the Paso Robles City Library will be hosting an open house as part of the Summer Reading Program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library at 1000 Spring St., across from the Paso Robles Inn.

The event will feature several operating model train layouts and displays in HO, N, O and On30 scales and there will be a model railroad yard sale with great deals on new and used model train gear. Loren Nicholson, local historian and author, will sign copies of his book “Rails Across the Ranchos.”

n A Quilt Trunk Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 275 N. Halcyon Road, Arroyo Grande. Over 60 quilts created by well-known local quilter Sandy Underwood will be on display. The event will also feature quilting demonstrations. Admission is $5 at the door.

A luncheon will be served from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Cost is $7 per person.

n Art in the Park at Dinosaur Caves in Shell Beach will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of the month through Nov. 2. Over 90 artists will feature paintings, sculptures, ceramics, home decoration, jewelry, glass art, textiles and bath and beauty products.

The event will include gourmet coffee and pastries, Alex’s barbecue, live music, art demonstrations and children’s activities. Admission is free. Dogs are welcome.

n A Father’s Day Barbecue and Fiesta will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Church, 298 S. Thompson Road, Nipomo. Admission is free. Activities will include children’s games, giveaways and a rummage sale. A barbecue chicken dinner is $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Beverages and takeout dinners will be available.

n The South County Senior Women’s Pool Players meet from 10 a.m. to noon the first, third and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

n Meathead Movers will host the second annual Girls Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mother’s Tavern, benefiting the local Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

Meatheads dressed in tuxedos will serve food to guests, in support of assisting abused and neglected children in San Luis Obispo County.

n “Meditation in Daily Living” will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 21 in Nipomo.

The event will begin with a 30-minute silent meditation. Ms. Ligia Dantes is the author of the books “The Unmanifest Self: Transcending the Limits of Ordinary Consciousness” and “Your Fantasies May be Hazardous to your Health: How Your Thoughts Create Your World.” There is no charge to attend and donations are accepted. The dialogue will be followed by tea and refreshments.

n Local leaders in the construction industry will host a casino night benefit June 28 to remember the life of Trent Tobin and to raise money to support his wife and daughters. Tobin, a longtime San Luis Obispo construction worker, died unexpectedly from pancreatic cancer on Feb. 17.

The event will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Holland Ranch, 2275 Carpenter Canyon Road, San Luis Obispo, and will feature a live and silent auction, casino games, food and drinks. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased by contacting Jaime at 788-0285 or at Monterey Street Espresso in downtown San Luis Obispo. Patrons must be 21 years or older to attend the event.
