Nipomo children are getting a taste of the stage this summer through a new program created by a Nipomo High School graduate now majoring in theater at Cal Poly.
Selyn Barrette, who graduated NHS in 2005, is leading a group of 14 students through the entire process of staging a musical as her senior project.
At the culmination of the three-month summer theater camp, her budding thespians will stage “Aladdin Jr.” in a single performance Aug. 15 at Nipomo High — unless more children sign up.

Athletics crowned Arroyo Grande Babe Ruth champions
One championship game was not enough, rather, two games were needed to decide the Arroyo Grande Babe Ruth Champion.
On Saturday, the Athletics dropped the first game 7-2 to the Yankees, but in the second and deciding game, the A’s claimed the title with a 9-5 win at Soto Field.
“[The kids] were absolutely ecstatic,” A’s coach Phil Ball said. “We had three-to-four months of constant batting practice, but it didn’t really come together until the end of the season.”

PCPA offers outstanding musical comedy
On opening night at the PCPA production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” there was one serious flaw. That was the fact that the show opened in front of a small crowd.
Several regulars at the Marian Theater, for some reason, did not show up. Perhaps it was because they were not familiar with the show.
